SalonsRated

This calculator starts from a single number: $85, the blended midpoint per visit when cut-and-color appointments and stand-alone color services are averaged across US salons, documented in our average salon prices guide. Adjust how often you go, what you typically get done, and whether you tip, and the estimate updates instantly to show your realistic annual spend.

No sign-up, no email gate, and nothing is stored. Use the result as a planning baseline before your next booking - the range shown reflects how widely real salon bills vary at the same service type across different markets and stylists.

How this calculator works

The estimate uses a per-visit baseline of $85, which represents the midpoint of blended US salon pricing when haircut-only visits and color-service visits are weighted by typical visit frequency. That baseline is then adjusted by two multipliers:

  • Service mix. A cut-only visit typically runs $40-$55 at a mid-market salon, which is roughly 55 percent of the blended baseline. A color-plus-treatment visit (gloss, keratin smoothing, or similar add-on) typically runs 40-50 percent above the cut-and-color midpoint - closer to $120-$130 or more at a full-service colorist. Our hair color cost guide breaks the color side down by service type.
  • Tipping. A 20 percent tip on the pre-tax service total is the industry standard, as covered in our how much to tip your hairdresser guide. Selecting "without tip" removes that multiplier; the base per-visit price is always pre-tip.

The range shown is plus or minus 22 percent, which reflects how widely salon bills vary within the same service tier across different markets, salon types, and stylist experience levels. A senior colorist at an independent salon and a chair at a mid-market chain can both deliver a cut-and-color, and their tickets will not look alike.

What it does not include

The estimate covers recurring visit spend only. It excludes one-time or infrequent services - hair extensions, a significant color correction, a keratin treatment, or a major transformation appointment - which sit outside the typical visit cadence and have their own cost profiles covered in the individual service guides.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the average person spend at the salon per year?

At 6 visits a year with a cut-plus-color mix and a standard tip, the national midpoint works out to roughly $600-$650. Regular color clients who visit 8-10 times a year and add treatments can reach $1,200 or more annually before extensions or correction appointments are counted.

How much does a salon visit cost on average?

A haircut-only visit at a mid-market US salon typically runs $40-$70 before tip. A cut-and-color or stand-alone color service runs $80-$130 or more, and adding a gloss or treatment pushes that higher. Senior stylists and major-city salons often sit well above these midpoints.

How much do salons charge for color?

Single-process color typically costs $60-$100 at a mid-market US salon. Highlights, balayage, and multi-step color work range from $100 to $300 or more depending on technique, hair length and density, and the colorist's experience level. See the hair color cost guide for a full breakdown by service type.

Should I tip my hairdresser every visit?

The industry standard is yes - 15-20 percent of the pre-tax service total is the norm for most hair services. Tipping applies whether you see the salon owner or an associate; the distinction that salon owners do not need tips is outdated in most current salon models.

Does the calculator store my numbers?

No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser, nothing is sent to a server, and there is no sign-up or email gate. Clear your browser data and the inputs reset.
